ADVISORY FOR INDIAN NATIONALS VISITING ITALY 

In recent times, there has been a significant increase in the number of thefts in Rome, Milan and other cities in Italy. Indian nationals visiting the country have often become victims of such thefts in which they lose cash, credit cards, mobile phones, passports and other valuables.  

In this regard, Indian nationals visiting Italy are advised to:

- to be vigilant and careful about their phones, wallet, purses, bags, backpack, belongings and travel documents while travelling and sightseeing in Italy; 

- Avoid wearing Gold ornaments, jewellery in public places; 

- beware of pickpocketing in hotel lobbies (especially during check-in and check-out, buffet breakfast ), tourist locations, while using public transport, ATM machines, etc;

- Avoid leaving bags or any other belongings in the car or taxi, which could be visible when you are outside the vehicle. 

The majority of theft cases have been reported near popular tourist attractions in Rome especially Colosseum and Trevi Fountain. Tourists are advised to remain extra vigilant at these locations. 

In case of theft of Indian passport/OCI card or any other travel document, kindly visit the nearest police station (Questura or Carabinieri) and file a police complaint (mention passport/OCI card number in the complaint).

In case of loss of passport/ travel documents, Indian nationals can apply for an Emergency Certificate(EC)/Passport by bringing the following documents to the Embassy:

  • Emergency certificate/ passport renewal application form to be filled online at
    https://portal3.passportindia.gov.in/Online/index.html 

  • Copy of the lost passport complaint filed at the local Italian police station (with passport number mentioned) 

  • copy of lost passport 

  • flight ticket to India 

  • Copy of Italian resident card (if applying for passport renewal) S
