India-San Marino Bilateral Relations
Consular relations between India and San Marino were established in June 1961. These were elevated to the diplomatic level in December 2004. In 2007, San Marino appointed Mr. Analjit Singh as it’s Honorary Consul General based in New Delhi. On 11 March 2022, MEA has shared Exequatur confirming the appointment of Mr. Analjit Singh as the Honorary Consul of the Republic of San Marino in New Delhi. Ms. Chiara Taddei has been appointed as non-resident Ambassador of San Marino to India.
- San Marino has a special relationship with India, given the shared and long-standing pursuit of the ideals of peace and non-violence championed by Mahatma Gandhi. A prominent square in San Marino is named after Mahatma Gandhi, as a bust of Gandhiji, gifted by the Government of India, was installed in the square on 2 Oct 1985.On 15 Aug 1986, the Government of San Marino issued a special stamp to commemorate this event.
- During the Second World War, Rifleman Sher Bahadur Thapa of Gorkha Rifles died in action in the battle of Monte Pulito, fought on 18 Sept 1944 near Faetano on the eastern border of San Marino. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry and supreme sacrifice. In September 2008, a memorial of Sher Bahadur Thapa was unveiled in Faetano.
Visits
- At the invitation of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of San Marino, Dr Najma Heptulla, former President of The Council of Inter Parliamentary Union and Deputy Chairperson of Rajya Sabha visited San Marino for the investiture ceremony of Captains Regent from Sept 30-Oct 3, 2000. Dr. Heptulla met Mr. Gianfranco Terenzi and Mr. Enzo Colombini, Captains Regent and Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Mr. Gabriele Gatti.
- TheMinister of Food Processing Industries Smt. Harsimrat Kaur Badal visited San Marino from 30 September to 1 October, 2016 andmet the State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Mrs. Pasquale Valentini. She also visited a food packaging company along with the State Secretary for Industry Mr. Marco Arzilli. On 1 October, 2016, Hon’ble Minister attended a ceremony for appointment of the new Captains Regents were anointed for a period of six months.
- ThenExternal Affairs Minister, Smt. Sushma Swaraj met Foreign Minister Nicola Renzi on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York in Sept 2017.
Commercial
7. India and San Marino enjoy good political and commercial relations. Some companies from San Marino have investments in India. In May 2016, Embassy organized a tourism seminar "Enchanting India" in San Marino with Cox & Kings. An investment summit was organized by the Embassy in July 2016 in collaboration with San Marino Chamber of Commerce. A delegation from Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Indian importers Chamber of Commerce & Industry participated in the Investment Summit.
8. An Agreement between India and San Marino for Exchange of Information with respect to Taxes was signed in Rome on 19.12.2013.
9. Bilateral trade reached $0.59 million in FY 2023-24, with an increment of +9.26% over the previous FY. India’s exports to San Marino increased to $0.52 million.

10. The Republic of San Marino has beensupportive ofIndia’s candidature to UN bodies.
Culture
11. India maintains close contacts with the San Marino government through its Embassy in Rome. The Celebration of International day of Yoga has become a traditional event in San Marino, patronized by local institutions and jointly organized with the local Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
12. In 2024, San Marino authorities joined hands with the Embassy to organize the celebration of the Yoga Day in San Marino. Ambassador Alessandra Albertini, Department of Foreign Affairs of San Marino and H.E. Lazzaro Rossini representing Minister of Culture and Education participated as Chief guests.
13. Thecelebration to commemorate the 150thbirth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi concluded in 2020 with participation of the Heads of the Republic of San Marino, Captain Regents and Secretary of State.
- Ambassador Vani Rao presented her credentials of appointment to the Captains Regent H.E. Ms. Francesca Civerchia and H.E. Mr. Dalibor Riccardi on 14 January 2025 in San Marino. She also called on H.E. Luca Beccari, Foreign Minister, H.E. Mr. Teodoro Lonfernini, Minister of Culture and H.E. Mr. Elia Rossi, the Deputy Minister of Economy. Ambassador Rao gifted more than 100 books about India to the University of San Marino, to set up an India corner. She also paid respects at the bust of Mahatma Gandhi and the memorial for Sher Bahadur Thapa in Faetano.
