Hon’ble Shri Om Birla, Speaker of the Lok Sabha visited Italy on the occasion of the 7th G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit held in Rome from October 7-8, 2021.
Discussions were held at the Palazzo Madama, House of the Upper House of Italian Parliament. Opening Session of the Summit was inaugurated by Duarte Pacheco, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). Prime Minister of Italy, Mario Draghi was the keynote speaker.
Hon’ble Speaker participated in discussions on the theme “Response to the Social and Employment Crisis caused by the Pandemic” at the First Working Session of the G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit and addressed the Summit during the Second Working Session on the theme “Rebooting Economic Growth in terms of Social and Environmental Sustainability’’.
On the sidelines of P20 Summit, Shri Om Birla held wide-ranging discussions with the representatives of various countries and held bilateral meetings with Hon’ble Duarte Pacheco, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU); Hon’ble Jan Anthonie Bruijn, President of the Eerste Kamer of Netherlands; HE Ms Nosiviwe Noluthando Mapisa-Nqakula, Speaker, National Assembly of South Africa; Hon’ble Dr. Reiner Haseloff, President of German Bundesrat; Hon’ble Lindsay Hoyle, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, 158th Speaker of the UK and HE Ms. Puan Maharani, Speaker-House of Representatives, Indonesia
He also met HE Ms. Maria Elisabetta Alberti Casellati, President-Italian Senate on sidelines of G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit and congratulated her for hosting the Summit successfully and discussed issues of energy, education, culture, infrastructure & food processing. He also highlighted India’s successful fight against Covid19 and the vaccination programme. During the meeting, it was proposed that India-Italy Parliamentary Friendship group should meet regularly and it was agreed that both Parliaments should share parliamentary best practices in interest of democracy and people’s welfare.
The delegation led by Hon'ble Speaker Om Birla also had fruitful and pleasant interactions with Hon'ble members of the Italy-India Parliamentary Friendship Group, as well as some other Parliamentarians of Italy.
